Why conlangs attract such less women?

Message publicper esra » sab. feb 15, 2014 3:44 pm

Salute,

it seems to be that conlangs doesn't attract women a lot. What could be the reasons for that? Does an conlang needs lot more of songs to attract more women? Esperanto community excluded, there are really not much examples where women are active. I only found two excamples:

Dorothea (Slovio).

Alyssa (Interlingua, only 1 year active in 2000); That posting could give some hint to thesis what could attract more women for some conlang.

(Use "per topic:" navigation bar to follow the conversation)

I really wonder. At younger Esperanto community there is 50:50 situation of women and men. Have women more motivation to organize real life conlang events?

You have an excellent question. Having been around the international auxiliary language movement for many years myself, I have noticed that there are very few females who participate in online fora. I honestly do not know why this is so. (There is, or at least was, a mailing list CONLANG for constructed, but not necessarily auxiliary, languages, which had more female participants.)

I would like find out why that is different within younger Esperanto community. At least I remember two other examples where women are or were project leader.

Example one: more or less Veronika is project leader of Muzaiko
Example two: 1th JES mainly organized by two women.

Very gender mixed organizers list of SES, JES and FESTO.

Very gender mixed list of participants of SES, JES and FESTO.

In my opinion there's lot of more younger generation of women who are very, very keen of to pushing matter forwards. I'm not sure about that prejudice. But it could be that these women are daughters of women who did grow up inside former communism states where it was expected by society not to hide inside household only. I.e. every women under communist regime had to have some profession. There were no exceptions. Seems to be that this was very different inside non-communist societies.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I assume this picture doesn't show all of participants. But its some kind of proof, that at least Interlingua isn't matter of men only.

According her Facebook page next movie "Granny's Dancing on the Table" of Hanna Sköld will be finished by end of May 2015.

"... 3. Oktober 2014: Dear friends now it's official, the fantastic news I'v been so eager to tell you. Granny finally got support from the Swedish film institute! This means that we can shoot the final part of Granny, do the postproduction and have a finished film in May!! ..."

Production costs were financed by Kickstarter crowd funding and Svenska Filminstitutet.

Finished movie will published according Creative Commons licence CC BY-NC-SA 3.0. That means:

Someones is free to:

Share — copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format
Adapt — remix, transform, and build upon the material

"Granny's Dancing on the Table" has female main character. If I got it right then movies story is based on personal experiences by director, too.

Hanna is director of Nasty Old People, too. Version with subtitles included can be found here.

Some interviews with her can be found at Youtube. Most are in Swedish, but some are in English, too. Search for "Hanna Sköld". Hanna is member of Tangram Film collective.

It should be worth to subtitle this movie. I'm sure out of these Interlingua subtitles several teaching material could be extracted. I.e. Lingofox or Zarb utilities makes it very easy to create work sheets out of text material. So in result some conlang movie fan community could develop "similar"(1) like Avatar's Na'vi conlang.

Amicalmente,

(1) but for sure: Interlingua style, "human speech based"
